Summer Series Options

Over the years I’ve done the Narrative Lectionary I have generally joined with colleagues in my area to do our own thing in the summers. The Working Preacher suggestion for this summer is a series on Jeremiah. Below are some of the series I’ve been a part of over the years.

Holy Cross Day (Summer Series)

I am using the sundaysandseasons.com resources for prayers and am not writing my own. I will still list hymn suggestions and other resources for any others thinking about using this summer series.

Festival Day: September 14

This festival, which originated in the fourth century, celebrates the triumph of the cross. Paul reminds us that Christ crucified is the power and wisdom of God. As Moses put a serpent on a pole to be a source of healing for the Israelites, we lift high the cross as the sign of our health and salvation. Each time we make the sign of the cross we remember our baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ.

The archangel Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the heavenly army, defeating the dragon (the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan). It is important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God’s victory ultimately comes by Jesus’ death and the testimony of his followers. The power of God’s truth gives us confidence in the face of evil on earth, even in the face of our own death.

Bartholomew (Summer Series)

The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke include Bartholomew in their lists of the Twelve. Partly due to his connection with Philip, many scholars believe Bartholomew is probably the same person as Nathanael in John’s Gospel. Nathanael is one of the first disciples called to “come and see” (John’s version of “follow me”), and he is present on the shore of the Sea of Tiberius when the risen Christ invites his friends to “come and have breakfast” (John 21:12).

Mary, Mother of Jesus (Summer Series)

Mary’s role is not limited to giving birth to Jesus and mothering him in his childhood. In John’s gospel, she is among the women standing near the cross; in Acts, she is among the disciples awaiting the gift of the Spirit. Through all that happened she continued to see how God was at work through her son, keeping the ancient promises to her ancestors, brushing aside the rich and powerful, and focusing on those as poor and powerless as Mary herself.

Simon and Jude (actually Judas, but he’s called Jude to better distinguish him from Judas Iscariot) are listed among Jesus’ inner circle of disciples. In today’s gospel, which is set at the last supper, Jude’s question (“How is it that you will reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?”) is in response to what Jesus says in verse 19: “In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.” The answer to Jude’s question will come in Jesus’ resurrection, the appearances of the risen Christ, and the coming of the Spirit.

Matthew (Summer Series)

Tax collectors were agents of the oppressive empire, and they also had a reputation for extorting more than they had to collect. Jesus’ calling Matthew to follow him showed that Jesus not only associated with “bad guys,” he welcomed them into his inner circle. His sharing a meal with Matthew and other tax collectors and “sinners” was an enacted parable of the mercy of God. The meal we share at Jesus’ table is to be such a parable too.
